A Dollar of Love and a Dime of Hate

2003

110 altered pennies and bowl

As part of the group exhibition Kismet: One man’s peril another man’s fortune, curated by Lia Trinka-Browner, Old Post Office Gallery, Kansas City, MO

Dollar of Love and a Dime of Hate

I took 100 pennies and stamped the names of friends and family members that I could say with confidence that I loved at the time. I stamped their names on the head’s side of the pennies. I took another 10 pennies and stamped the names of people I knew personally for whom I could honestly say I felt hate. I stamped their names on the tail’s side of the pennies. I displayed all of the pennies together in a bowl with the classic sign “take a penny, leave a penny” with no further information other than the title. After the exhibition at the Old Post Office was over, I also installed the work at the Brookside Neighborhood Office for a day with no explanation that it was an artwork.
