“INVASIVE ZINE began as a conversation between new arrivals in an office above a radio station. Andy had paper made by his friend Megan Heeres, who had visited Antioch and had given a papermaking workshop using invasive plants as source fiber.  Our conversation – between an artist and an ecologist – explored ways to use this paper in an art:science collaboration.  Andy also shared his collection of Laura Beyer’s “Hearty Greetings” zines. Looking at all of these things together, ideas sparked the gap and INVASIVE ZINE was born. We solicited submissions from artists and scientists, locally and internationally, through our professional networks and through the Ecological Society of America’s usenet – ECOLOG – which has a readership of more than 16,000 members.  We selected works that address the impact of invasive organisms, the notion of “invasiveness”, what is lost by their presence, and the challenges they create in 21st century landscapes. Some of the entries – and the handmade paper – seek to change our perspective that invasive organisms may also be bountiful source material as well as biological curse.
