Bruce R. Watkins Drive: Deflection Run
2003
A performance for two cars with Dustin Dennis. Each car drives the side streets on opposite sides of Bruce R. Watkins Drive (U.S. Highway 71) starting from opposing ends. Every time the driver is forced to turn due to a deadend caused by the creation of the highway, he takes a picture. Documented with map, and digital photos.

“Kansas City has the highest per capita urban pavement in the U.S., reflecting its drivability. However, the Watkins Drive Deflection Run installation showcases the disruption caused by constructing the 10.2-mile Bruce R. Watkins Drive in 2003, creating dead-end streets in the otherwise efficient network. In this performance Thompson and Dustin Dennis drive into the city from opposite ends until forced to detour by the new parkway. Red and grey lines on the map indicate how Thompson headed south on U.S. Route 71 from the city’s northeast end in his grey station wagon while Dennis navigated a red sedan northward from the southwest. They record their many forced detours in a series of windshield photos.”
