Determining New Destination for Tire: Leg One
2002
Tire filled with cement rolled approximately 3 miles from studio to the exhibition. Documented with sign & map
5’ x 3’
This piece directly follows from a previous performance work where I took a discarded tire for daily walks. People who encountered me pushing the loose tire around on the street would politely pull over in their cars to ask me if I needed help or a ride to get my tire fixed. It became clear to me that folks weren’t perceiving the artwork as an art. I believed I needed to eliminate the obvious interpretation that I was a person in automotive distress. My decision was to neuter the possibility of the tire being repaired or used for anything functional. I did so by filling the tire full of concrete. Then I pushed the tire three miles up and down the kills of Kansas City from my studio at KCAI to the Arthel Bldg downtown for the Sculpture Dept. pop-up exhibition, Soul Tube. In homage to Richard Long and Hamish Fulton I decided to just share the facts of the performance without photo or video documentation where I would need to perform for the camera.
