Drawing Yellow
District 1345 Division

Chalk drawing on street in front of artist’s loft
20’ x 26’
Video created 2021
“This stop-motion video is taken from the window of the artist’s second apartment in Eastern Market on 1345 Division Street in Detroit. It details the brief one-day life cycle of the third installment of the Representing Congress series, recording the making and erasure of nine historical boundaries in chalk. The first two Representing Congress installations, created from vinyl tape and plastic, reflected what was then the 14th district’s electoral history. The 2019 chalk outlines in District 1345 Division provide a large-scale depiction of the post-1893 evolution of what was then the 13th congressional district. Gentrification forced the artist to move out of his loft on Riopelle Street, in one congressional district, and move four blocks over into another district.”
