Goodson Street Garden Banana Processing Unit is a DIY-style vermiculture composting bin to deal with the impending banana peel food waste generated during the run of the exhibition BANANA! at Public Pool gallery in Hamtramck, MI. Goodson Street Garden is a small community garden that the artist participates in, along with artist Toby Millman, that is located on the south end of Hamtramck. The bin is made from used kitty litter containers sourced from an alley on the north end of Hamtramck. Public Pool is the meeting point between the two parts of town and also the meeting point between the artists' interests in visual art and gardening. Featured on the outside of the bin is a portrait of the artist eating a banana in the garden. Inside the bin is the hard work of red wiggler worms eating what we cannot.

“The bin needs to be kept out of direct sunlight to keep the worms from getting too hot (death) and they're not as active (eating) in the light. There must always be a layer of moist newsprint on top of the pile of refuse within the bin, to keep the worms from drying out (death) plus they don't like to eat whatever is on top of the pile. So, wet paper on top keeps them occupied with the banana peels below. If they're not eating then the bin will begin to smell. Because of the need to add moist newsprint to the piece it might make sense if it is near the bathroom, but is not a requirement. Food scraps (banana peels) can be added to the bin, but once there is a thin layer of peels then a layer of moist newsprint needs to be added before more bananas can be put on top. So, it's kinda like a newsprint banana lasagna inside.”
