“My most immediate explanation of this performance is that it was a break-up piece – with the city of Auburn Hills. I made a shirt with a map of Auburn Hills, my place of residence at the time, silk-screened onto it, and wore it while walking around the perimeter of the city clockwise. While circumambulating the city, my right arm was extended so the map of the city could be pointing back at the city. I took several rolls of slide film as I made my tour of the town. The slides were shown next to the shirt. The phrase was used because Auburn Hills was the first residence away from my parents and the city is technically a year younger than I am. You strike out on your own in the big, cold world and it turns out it’s younger than you. I also admire Humphrey Bogart as it might be inferred by the title.”
— Statement about the work excerpted from my master’s thesis
