Plaster Sandwich No. 1

2009

Open edition casts of half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich

5” x 3” x 1”

Holding the sandwich

I was teaching an Intro to Sculpture class at College for Creative Studies in Winter of 2009 and one of the assignments was on mold making. I demoed how to make 1, 2, and multi part plaster molds using common items around us: a disposable coffee cup with a lid (that I had finished drinking right before class) and a banana that I had brought for my lunch. After I pulled the banana out of the plaster molds I peeled it and ate it. This seemed to amuse the students and myself, so I kept it going by sealing with spray shellac half of my peanut butter & jelly sandwich and then using that for demoing a polyurethane rubber mold. That  I was not able to eat! The rubber mold is durable even though it is decaying every time I cast from it, but I still use the mold for demos at Stamps School of Art & Design.
