I was doing a variety of experiments in my first year in the Sculpture Department at the Kansas City Art Institute with gluing stacked layers of plywood, carving them, and sandblasting them to accentuate the variation in grain, which culminated in the piece Canyon Sunrise. As I struggled with trying to make something sculptural with the plywood material I was just really in love with the visual impact of the laminated edge grain of the plywood and decided to make a rectilinear object with flat faces to best show off the edge grain. With this goal in mind I turned to furniture and manufactured my own plywood veneer to make it so every surface featured these distinct lines.
