I love the pleasure that a fresh batch of blueberries newly bought, washed, and consumed can bring. I hate that the best, convenient system of delivery of those berries is through plastic forever trash. The temporary ecstasy comes with an effectively permanent burden. I bought some blueberries, made a pie with them and was left with the PET vented hinged plastic containers that briefly housed them. I cast the clamshell containers in white plaster and pigmented cement, and arranged them like a proto-chessboard. The heavy materials signify the weight of the burden that results from the plastics' production, and the pseudo game board acknowledges the challenges we've created for ourselves through our manufacturing and cultural production. The abstract representations of the blueberries act as decoys to remind me of how much I like the fruit, whilst also trying to maintain a policy of abstinence in the acquisition of more plastic produce containers.
