Based on An Idea is Not an Image, this book shelf pedestal was originally part of the group exhibition lol everything matters, 2018, curated by Holliday Martindale, Flophouse Gallery, Royal Oak, MI
“I would make a freestanding sculpture that essentially was a pedestal size/shape, but made out of dry erase board material, with a section cut out in the middle for a bookshelf. There would be philosophy, sociology, and art theory books housed in the pedestal and then the pedestal would be covered in writing/mind-mapping/drawings related to the notions of the subjective experience and Pragmatism, Existentialism, and Solipsism (along with Pop-Culture references) inspired by the phrase "An idea is not an image". Basically, me ruminating on how truths are established, communicated, and tested…”

For the duration of the exhibition, anyone can peruse the books on the bookshelf, write on the dry erase pedestal, or erase what has been written on the pedestal. There is no gallery attendant for a majority of the time that the Stamelos Gallery Center is open, and it is open whenever the Mardigian Library that houses the gallery is open. As a result there is ample opportunity for people to write whatever they want. My hope is that they may write reflections about the Detroit-oriented books on display, give feedback about the exhibition, or write a poem, but it also doesn’t matter what I want. I was glad the piece provided an expressive outlet for the students and staff of University of Michigan-Dearborn. Every other week or so I would visit the gallery, document the pedestal, and then do a full cleaning of the marker board.
