Suspenders

2000

Salt fired stoneware

10” x 10” x 12”

This was created as part of an icebreaker assignment during our first week as Sophomores in the Sculpture Department at Kansas City Art Institute. I had done mostly work in ceramics for my sculpture classes in highschool at Paseo Academy of the Fine & Performing Arts, and had fun working with a familiar material. I was thinking about bodies and bellies and functionality and like a Macintosh Classic II, I added a big handle on top to signify use even if it wasn’t intended to function as a conventional vessel. Later I made the piece Tire with Tire Suspenders that also addressed bodies and bellies and functionality in a related way, so seems important to me to share this early precursor.
