Cement block cast around tire, then tire removed
30” x 24” x 40”
Note: The title is the brand-name of the tire.
After having filled a tire full of concrete in a previous piece, Determining New Destination for Tire: Leg One, I decided to cast concrete around a tire and remove the tire from within the concrete block as a memorial to the object in its absence. This was directly inspired by the used motor oil monoprints I had made impulsively the year prior. I built a wooden stand for the concrete that took cues from both Isamu Noguchi’s piece Six-Foot Energy Void at the Nelson-Atkins Museum and also the display palettes for buildings’ cornerstones at the City Museum in St. Louis.
