Detail above
This piece ended up being my final piece at KCAI and my contribution to the graduating senior exhibition. I had a much more elaborate project planned that would be an extension of the previous pieces Ameri-G4s, Corvette Capital, and Tire Tracks that would be a concrete rocking table molded from altered tire treads that would self-destruct during the run of the exhibition. During my research, planning, and material experimentation phase of my thesis project I was diagnosed with double hernias which put the kibosh on my big plans.
I had made a large semi spherical plaster mold in service of my original idea and impulsively sprayed the remainder of a can of “Great Stuff” expandable foam into a triangular shape in a portion of the mold. Before The foam was fully set I jammed a scrap piece of 2x4 into it creating this peculiar form. It has a similar homology to the previous cast iron piece “You always were so tall…” and so I decided to make a reason-bonded sand mold of it and add it to the next iron pour happening. I applied patina to the underside and then polished the top convex portion and it rested directly on the ground for the exhibition.
